Program Specialists plan, develop, implement, supervise and evaluate activities provided within a specific program area, such as Education and Career Development, Technology, Character and Leadership; Health and Life Skills; The Arts; Sports, Fitness and Social Recreation.

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities)

Sports, Fitness, and Social Recreation Specialist

Responsible for overseeing the planning, development, implementation, supervision and evaluation of a broad range of programs that support knowledge and skills related to health, nutrition, fitness, inter-personal communication and teamwork. Programs include: nutrition, calisthenics, teambuilding, co-ed sports, sports leagues, gamesroom activities and more.

Prepare Youth for Success

Create an environment that facilitates the achievement of Youth Development Outcomes:

  • promote and stimulate program participation

  • register new members and participate in their club orientation process

  • assist youth with goal setting and skills development

  • provide guidance and role modeling to members

Program Development and Implementation

  • Effectively develop and implement programs, services and activities for members and visitors.

  • Monitor and evaluate programs, services and activities to ensure safety of members, quality in programs and appearance of the branch at all times.

  • Prepare periodic activity reports, administer surveys, track progress and make continuous program improvements.


  • Experience working with youth and understanding of youth development

  • An ability to work with diverse ages, including teens Demonstrated experience conducting youth activities in at least one of the designated Core Areas High School Diploma or GED BA/BS in the Arts, Education, Child Development, Behavioral Sciences, Recreation or a related field is highly desirable

  • NCLB (No Child Left Behind) certification required or a minimum of 48 units completed from an accredited university

  • Negative TB test

  • CPR and First Aid Certification (Within 30 days of hire) Fingerprinting/criminal background check is required

  • Proficient in communicating in English (reading, writing, speaking)

  • Second language highly desirable

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office platform

  • Available on Fridays to attend staff meetings

  • Participation in special programs and/or events beyond regular hours, including weekends

  • Must attend staff meetings and participate in staff training events

  • May be required to drive Club van


Internal: Maintains close, daily contact with Club staff and volunteers, Club members, and supervisor(s) to receive and provide information, discuss issues, explain guidelines, provide instructions, teach, advise and counsel.

External: Maintains contact with external community groups, partner agencies, schools, parents and others to achieve youth development goals and outcomes.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Frequent standing and walking; occasional lifting (up to 25 pounds at waist height); hear and understand speech at normal levels; and speak so that others may understand at normal levels.


Boys & Girls Clubs are often stressful, busy and noisy environments. Program Specialists are expected to work in situations where many member and facilities related activities take place at the same time.
